What is the Virtues Project and why use it at Broadlands School?

Below is an excerpt from the new Draft Curriculum. The words in bold are those which directly link to Virtues the staff has selected to be most relevant to the needs or our pupils at Broadlands School.

“ Values”

Every decision relating to curriculum or programmes and every interaction that takes place in a school reflects the values of the individuals involved and the collective values of the institution.  The values outlined in this curriculum are those that the New Zealand community supports because they enable us to live together and thrive in a diverse, democratic society in the twenty-first century.

New Zealand students are encouraged to value: excellence, by aiming high and by persevering in the face of difficulties.  Innovation, enquiry, and curiosity, by thinking creatively, critically, and reflectively; diversity, as found in our different cultures, languages and heritages; respect for themselves, for others, and for human rights; equity, which means fairness and social justice; community and participation for the common good; care for the environment (the Earth and its interrelated eco-systems); integrity, which involves being honest, responsible, and accountable and acting ethically.”

“The Virtues Project is not about having control over children, but giving children the skills to have control over themselves”

The mission of the Virtues Project is to provide empowering strategies that inspire the practice of virtues in everyday life. It was founded in Canada in 1991 by Linda Kavelin-Popov, a psychotherapist and community developer; Dan Popov, Ph.D., a clinical pediatric psychologist and scholar of the world’s sacred texts; and John Kavelin, a Director with Walt Disney Imagineering. They were all concerned about the rising violence among youth and families and wanted to do something to help.

The Virtues Project Educator’s Guide was written by Linda Kavelin-Popov, sharing success stories around the world of how schools are applying the five strategies to create a climate of caring and character. This will be our key guiding document.
